Brazil exceeds 20 million infections by COVID

Brazil, one of the countries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, has registered in the last 24 hours 40,716 new infections of coronavirus, with what the total number of infected since the beginning of the pandemic exceeded the 20 million mark, official sources reported this Wednesday.

Despite having only 2.7% of the world’s population, Brazil, with a total of 20,026,533 infections, concentrates 10% of the 200 million cases registered to date worldwide, according to data from the American Johns Hopkins University.

Brazil is the third country with the most cases in the world, after the United States, which has 35.2 million and India, which has a total of 31.7 million.

Despite the high numbers, both the number of deaths and infections continue to fall in Brazil.

The Latin American giant, with 212 million inhabitants, has counted in the last 24 hours 1,175 new deaths from COVID, bringing the total number of victims to 559,607 since the beginning of the pandemic.

That number converts to Brazil in the second country with the most deaths by COVID in the world after the United States.

The average number of deaths in the last week, however, has fallen to 918 per day, its lowest level in almost seven months, from the average of 867 deaths per day recorded on January 8.

The current average of deaths is less than three times lower than that registered on April 12 of this year, when, at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, the average number of deaths from COVID in Brazil was 3,124 per day.
