Tokyo 2020, cross-country swimming: Paltrinieri bronze in the 10 km | News

A huge Greg wins his second medal in these Games. Gold to the German Wellbrock

Gregorio Paltrinieri never ceases to amaze and excite at the Tokyo Olympics. The class of ’94, silver in the 800 freestyle, gets the second medal around his neck in this edition of the Games, finishing third in the 10 km in open water. An unpredictable result a few weeks ago, when he was struggling with a form of mononucleosis. The gold medal goes to the German Florian Wellbrock, the Hungarian silver Kristof Rasovszky.

Another superlative performance by Gregorio Paltrinieri at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The blue closes the 10 km open water swimming in third position, winning his second personal medal after silver in the 800 freestyle. A capital test, considering that his participation was questioned by the form of mononucleosis which did not allow him to train properly for several weeks in preparation for the event.

The race is conditioned by a Florian Wellbrock on a day of grace. The German immediately started with a great pace and was soon alone, while behind a group of a few riders he chased in a matter of seconds. Paltrinieri he manages with intelligence and remains at about half a minute for a long time, aware that he can play his cards later. When Wellbrock slows his pace slightly, Olivier first and then falls on him Rasovszky. The Emilian climbs up positions and manages to hook up with the leading group, just before the German’s new acceleration, which has been trimmed again.

Three kilometers from the finish, the fight for medals is enriched by two new possible protagonists, Kynigakis and Roditi. The latter two, however, do not have the strength of the former: when Wellbrock forces again, only Rasovszky tries to follow him, while behind Paltrinieri he detaches Olivier and the rest of the company. The German flies towards the solitary gold medal, which he wins with almost 25 ”of margin after a race dominated from start to finish. Behind him Greg resumes Rasovszky and tries to fight for the sprint with him, but the Hungarian has something more in the sprint and takes the silver. Bronze remains a great joy for Paltrinieri, arrived with a thousand unknowns at this Olympics and ready to go home with two medals. Meanwhile, the Italian expedition reaches 31 podiums.
