“Evil Dead Rise” should be at the top of the watch list for many horror fans. It will take a while until we get to see the new “Dance of the Devils” – but the first pictures from the set should make gorehounds happy.
The devils are dancing again! After Sam Raimi’s no-budget horror cult film “Tanz der Teufel” received two sequels from the master himself (“Tanz der Teufel II” and “Army der Darkis”), before Fede Alvarez’s new edition finally followed with “Evil Dead” in 2013 – which is one of the best and most popular horror remakes of all time among genre fans to this day – with “Evil Dead Rise” a new chapter in the Necronomicon saga is opened once again.
When the main actor of the original series and the series offshoot “Ash Vs. Evil Dead”, Bruce Campbell, confirmed some time ago that he will not return as Ash in the fifth film in the series, many fans first had to digest it. Because even if “Rise” is not intended to be a direct sequel, the fan hope lives on until the very end, especially in such nostalgic cases.
Now there is finally positive news for all “Tanz der Teufel” fans – because director Lee Cronin (“The Hole In The Ground”) shared some blood-soaked pictures of the filming currently in progress that made you want more make:
On it is not only a lot of blood (and even a severed leg), but also one or the other allusion to the original series – such as the pizza box at Henrietta’s pizzeria. As is well known, Henrietta was the wife of Professor Raymond Knowby – and the first victim of the diabolical demon.
“Dance of the Devil”: Colorful horror potpourri
That with, among others, Alyssa Sutherland (“The Fog”), Lilly Sullivan (“Jungle”) and Morgan Davies (“The Hunter”) in “Evil Dead Rise” it should once again go in a new direction – for example away from the remote Waldhütte and into the big city – should only surprise fans of the series to a limited extent. After all, “Dance of the Devil” has always stood for change, so to speak.
Even part 2, which is often viewed as a remake of the original, not only comes with a significantly more budget, but above all, much funnier. With “Army of Darkness” the series drifted almost entirely into the comedy segment anyway, before the remake burned itself into the minds of the cinema audience as a rock-hard slaughter.
What has also changed a lot over the years, by the way, is the attitude of the FSK to the series. While the first “Tanz der Teufel” film was on the index for a long time, the original series is now completely rehabilitated and available unabridged (even from the age of 16) – both on disc and as a stream. For example at Amazon Prime Video, where the author of this article believes that the best film of the series, Part 2, is currently even included in the subscription:

Only “Evil Dead” still has a hard time in Germany. The remake, which got a respectable 4 out of 5 possible stars in the FILMSTARTS review, is only available in the shortened FSK-18 version in Germany. The uncut theatrical version and the extended cut, which is almost five minutes longer, are indexed and therefore cannot be freely advertised or sold in Germany.
