Thailand exceeds 20,000 daily COVID-19 infections for the first time
The strong wave of infections and deaths with COVID-19 in Thailand continues to rise when registering this Wednesday 20,200 cases and 188 deaths, new records, despite the strong measures imposed on Bangkok and 29 other provinces.
Regrowth, linked to delta variant of the virus, has led the Thai government to impose the night curfew, the limitation of meetings to five people and the closure of restaurants, shopping centers and other establishments.
The authorities, for the moment, rule out passing a 24-hour lockdown and stricter restrictions against the outbreak detected in April and that since then accumulates more than 95% of the 672,385 cases registered since the beginning of the pandemic, and adds up to 98% of the 5,503 deaths.
The hospitals in the capital, epicenter of the current wave, are at the edge of collapse with beds set up in car parks and, in some centers, even in modified freight containers as spaces to treat patients.
The health crisis is also affected by the slow progress of the massive campaign of vaccination, which does not manage to catch a constant rhythm in the administration of vaccines by lack of supply. The country has administered with the complete guideline only to about 6% of the population, while over 21% have at least one dose.
