NASA Investigate Alleged Water Hidden on the Moon’s Surface

SEMARANG, AYOSEMARANG.COM — NASA scientists continue to investigate the lunar surface.

They suspect water is hidden in the rough part of the Moon and the shadows that accompany it.

Quoting Suara.com, the Moon may have water on its surface.

However, experts are not quite sure how it happened.

Because there is no atmosphere to regulate the temperature during the day, so the surface of the Moon can boil water.

If any water is trapped, it can turn to ice overnight.

Because overnight on the Moon the surface temperature is around -150 degrees Celsius.

More than a decade ago, spacecraft detected the possible presence of water on the Moon’s surface during the day, explains Bjorn Davidson, an astrophysicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

This was confirmed by NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in 2020.

This observation was initially contradicted by previous theories. Water should not survive the harsh Moon environment.

It also challenges human understanding of the Moon’s surface and raises interesting questions about how volatiles, such as water ice, can survive on objects without air.

Research conducted in 2009 previously found that the amount of water changes depending on the time of day.

The team used thermophysical models to understand this and reported that there may be less water before noon on the hottest parts of the surface, but increases in the afternoon when temperatures start to cool.

In a recent study, Davidson and other researchers updated the model by making the Moon’s surface much rougher.
