Again the RKI reports an increased seven-day incidence. The federal government wants to get the corona situation under control – also with the vaccination offer for people aged twelve and over. But doctors, parents and teachers have reservations.
The school principals in Germany expect conflicts between teachers, parents and students due to an increase in corona vaccinations for twelve to 17-year-olds. “Of course there will be heated discussions in everyday life. The teachers have to be prepared for that,” said the chairwoman of the General School Management Association Germany, Gudrun Wolters-Vogeler, to the newspapers of the Funke media group.
Conflicts are expected “about the question of whether vaccinations are necessary and whether parental rights are being overlooked”. In addition, there will be “debates with children who may refuse vaccinations or who absolutely want to have them”. The head of the association continues to fear that there could also be conflicts due to quarantines. “If there is a positive Corona case in the class in the future, those who have not been double-vaccinated will have to be quarantined. The others, however, may remain in classroom lessons and can continue to participate in school activities. That will lead to tensions.”
Skepticism among parents was great
Many parents are very critical of the vaccinations offered to their children, said Ines Weber, a board member in the Federal Parents’ Council. She justified this with the fact that the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) in Germany has not yet made a general recommendation for children and there is a lack of certainty about the long-term effects of vaccination.
The conference of health ministers had decided to make the twelve to 17-year-olds more offers for a corona vaccination. The federal government hopes that this will result in a higher vaccination rate. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved vaccines from BioNTech and Moderna from the age of twelve. The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) in Germany still does not recommend corona vaccinations for children in general, but only if there is a higher risk of more severe courses – but they have long been possible with medical advice.
General Practitioners: No rush from families
According to their association chairman Ulrich Weigeldt, the general practitioners have not yet received any feedback about a rush of families who want advice. In the “Rheinische Post” he demanded that a safe start to school should also be made possible for unvaccinated children and young people with classroom instruction. “One thing must be clear: Under no circumstances should there be only the two options vaccination or homeschooling – politics must deliver more, the children and adolescents deserve that after this time of deprivation,” said Weigeldt.
Federal Family Minister Christine Lambrecht defended the vaccination offer for children and adolescents in order to protect them as well as possible from corona disease. “For our children it is absolutely necessary that classroom lessons take place again after the holidays. That is why a high vaccination rate is crucial – especially for adults,” added Lambrecht.
Seven-day incidence continues to rise
There is great concern about a fourth wave in Germany, because the number of new infections is increasing – and the seven-day incidence has been increasing for four weeks now. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), it is currently 18.5 – the previous day the value was 17.9, on the Wednesday of the previous week it was 15.0.
The health authorities in Germany reported 3571 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the figures from Tuesday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:20 a.m. A week ago, the value for Germany was 2768 infections within 24 hours. According to the new information, 25 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 21 deaths.
The RKI has counted 3,777,446 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,659,900. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 91,704.
