The elderly who live to 100 years have specific gut bacteria.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — A long and healthy life is the dream of many people. To achieve this dream, many people start to live a healthy life.
However, a recent study revealed that there are other reasons that cause a person to live longer than 100 years. Research conducted in Japan states that people who live to the age of 100 years or more, on average have gut bacteria with its own characteristics that apparently can help ward off infection.
The results showed that these bacteria produce specific compounds known as secondary bile acids. These compounds can contribute to a healthy gut so that the aging process occurs in a healthy manner.
However, the researchers say more research needs to be done to find out if these bacteria are capable of greatly extending life spans. Research published in journals Nature as of last week it only showed the relationship between these gut bacteria and life spans past 100 years.
“But researchers haven’t been able to prove that it’s these bacteria that cause people to live longer and healthier lives,” said study author Dr. Kenya Honda who is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo.
“While it may be possible to show that these bile acid-producing bacteria may contribute to a longer life span, we have no data to suggest a cause-and-effect relationship between them,” Honda told Live Science.
