Border guards detain 13 persons and two transferors for illegal border crossing Press release

On Friday, July 30, State Border Guard officials detained 10 Iraqi and 1 Syrian citizens, as well as two displaced persons, Estonian citizens, for intentional illegal crossing of the state border in Aukšdaugava region, while on August 31, another Indian and one Sri Lankan citizen were detained in Aukšdaugava region. who had crossed the border illegally.

The border guards of the Silene Border Guard Division of the Daugavpils Administration detained 11 persons, 10 Iraqi and one Syrian citizen in Saliena Parish, who had previously crossed the state border illegally. During the search, two Estonian citizens were detained in the village of Silene, who provided persons with the opportunity to stay in Latvia illegally and transfer them further to other European Union countries.

A case of illegal crossing of the state border was also detected on August 31, where in Saliena parish border guards detained one Indian and one Sri Lankan citizen.

In both cases, criminal proceedings have been initiated pursuant to Section 284, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law regarding intentional illegal crossing of the state border in a group of persons.

Persons who have crossed the state border illegally have been detained in accordance with the procedures specified in the Immigration Law and placed in the Accommodation Center for Detained Foreigners “Daugavpils”.

In its turn, according to Section 285.1, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law, criminal proceedings have been initiated against both Estonian citizens for providing deliberate persons with the opportunity to stay in the Republic of Latvia illegally. Both offenders were detained in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Law and by a decision of the Rezekne court, security measures were applied to them – detention.

There are no massive illegal border crossings on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, five cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian state border have been detected this year and a total of 27 third-country nationals have been detained – 23 Iraqi, one Syrian, one Sri Lankan, one Indian and one Belarusian. Assessing the situation in Lithuania, as well as taking into account the growing risks on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, enhanced border surveillance has been introduced and State Border Guard resources have been mobilized to monitor the green border, 24 national guards and four and FRONTEX experts with two vehicles.
