In the final, the Germans were close to doubling the British women, who had triumphed at the three previous games, but eventually their rivals finished the race in 4.10.607. Laura Kenny competed for the British team, adding silver to her collection of four Olympic gold medals.
The day before, the German women broke the world record for the first time, reaching 4.07.307 in qualifying, and earlier on Tuesday in the semi-final – 4.06.166.
Before the Tokyo Olympics, the world record was held by British women at 4-10,236.
Polish women did not take part in this competition.
