The Astra became the successor to the very successful Kadett model. With this name, it was produced in 1936 and 1940, its modern history has continued since 1960, and in 1985 it won the title of European Car of the Year in the sixth generation.
Unlike from VW Golf, its design has been evolving since being introduced in 1974, and the appearance of the astra in individual generations differs more markedly. The first generation, which took the name from the sister British characters Vauxhall (since 1980, Kadett has been sold in Britain as Vauxhall Astra), was designated by the letter F (the last Kadett bore the house E). And after the sales statistics VW Golf did not beat, the market succeeded. It has produced over 4.13 million units and is still the best-selling Opel model in history.
Astra F, which at the time attracted modern, attractive shapes and relatively large interior space, appeared on the market in five body versions such as t- and five-hatchback, sedan, station wagon and utility van, in 1993 a convertible was added.
Asters have been produced in Germany, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, South Africa, Taiwan and Argentina (and in the United Kingdom under the Vauxhall emblem). After the end of production in Germany in 1997, driving continued for five years, for example in Poland, where the Astra F was given the pdomek Classic. The offer also included a sports variant of the GSi with a two-liter 150 horsepower. The good features of the car included reliable engines, operating costs and low consumption. Weaknesses were the susceptibility to corrosion and the fluctuating quality of production.
The kind of generation of asters introduced in 1998 significantly changed the look, from a classic hatchback to a crossroads between a hatchback and a liftback, which manifested itself, for example, in the spacious interior and the increased luggage space. The sporty version of the GSi has been replaced by a new variant of the OPC (Opel Performance Center), which, according to reviews by experienced people, provides a large portion of equipment.
At that time, however, there was such a new important competitor, the Focus model, which Ford replaced the flying Escort and which impressed customers with its original shapes and excellent driving characteristics (more about nm tte here).
A third generation of asters, which was launched in 2004, achieved a strong rush. sales statistics did not even find the pemoitele and climbed and at first.
The following aster, marked J (the letter “A” in the intermediate Opel Kadett), has taken a number of exterior and interior features from its Insignia sedan, and critics have given it plenty of power and thoroughness. The current generation of asters has been produced since 2015 and a year later won the premier title of European Car of the Year.

In July this year, Opel unveiled a new generation of asters that will hit the market in the fall. The exclusive five-way car offers a distinctive look characterized by sharp-edged body edges, digital instruments and control over the touch of the display in the spirit of current automotive trends. The wide range of engines includes internal combustion engines as well as hybrid drive. The powertrains, as well as the chassis platform, were shared by a car with its Stellantis sibling, just before the recently introduced new Peugeot 308.
