Two marches to Türgarten Park, where a gathering of 10,000 people was scheduled, and a demonstration in Potsdamer Platz, where about 1,000 people were expected to arrive, were banned.
About 5,000 people took part in the unauthorized demonstration on Sunday, many of them linked to the Querdenken movement, which has proved to be the strongest protest in Germany against quarantine restrictions and an active disseminator of conspiracy theories, denying the facts of the pandemic. During the protests, clashes with police broke out and about 600 people were detained or temporarily detained to find out their personal details.
Police found that a 49-year-old man felt ill during his detention and was taken to a hospital where he died. He complained to the police about tingling in his arm and chest. He was given first aid and a doctor was called.
Police have justified banning these demonstrations while treating others more leniently, as protests organized by Querdenken deliberately violate the rules of social distancing that are still in place.
Querdenken regularly holds demonstrations in Germany that stand out in a radical tone, attracting far-right extremists, anti-Semites and conspiracy theorists.
