Man killed and several hundred arrested in corona demonstration in Berlin

Monday morning, German police report that a 49-year-old man died after he was arrested. While the police checked his ID, the man complained of radiation in his chest and arm. Police officers assisted the man with first aid until an ambulance arrived and drove him to hospital, but the man’s life could not be saved.

A routine investigation has been initiated.

5,000 protesters

German police say that a total of up to 5,000 people took part in the illegal demonstration. They were scattered in the districts of Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, Mitte and Kreuzberg.

In several places, clashes broke out between the protesters and the police, who had set up roadblocks and used water cannons against the protesters in the Tiergarten park.

The demonstrators demanded that the corona measures be abolished, and held up signs with inscriptions such as “End of the corona dictatorship” and “No testing: No pandemic”.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck, ignoring roadblocks and disrupting traffic in the German capital.

Declared illegal

Efforts are still being made to find out how many protesters and police officers were injured during the demonstrations.

– They tried to break past the police who blocked the road, and pull our colleagues out of the chain. This led to the use of sprays, batons and physical force, the Berlin police write.

It was expected that more than 20,000 would join Sunday’s demonstration, which was declared illegal by the judiciary.

The court pointed to fears that the protesters would not wear face masks or follow the advice to keep their distance.
