Olympia 2021: Germany’s eventing team missed a medal – the race to catch up remains uncrowned

The reward for the team did not come after a strong race to catch up: Despite three clear rounds in jumping, the German eventing team around three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung remained without precious metal with the team for the first time since Athens 2004.

The mortgage from the field test was simply too big. Jung (Horb) with Chipmunk, ex-world champion Sandra Auffarth (Ganderkesee) with Viamant du Matz and Krajewski (Warendorf) with Amande de B’Neville got a total of 114.20 penalty points on Monday and ended up 12.7 points behind France (101 , 50) on the bronze rank. Gold went to the superior British (86.30) ahead of Australia (100.20).

Jung, the individual winner of London and Rio, had suffered a severe setback the night before. He went into the field as the leader after the dressage, but there he made an obstacle error on his gelding Chipmunk. After a minimal touch, the safety mechanism, the so-called MIM system, was triggered – which surprised Jung, but the protest by the German team against the eleven penalty points was rejected.
