Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
President Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, blamed the attitude United States of America and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which suddenly drew troops actually made the security situation in the country worse due to the war with the Taliban.
“The current situation is due to the sudden decision regarding the withdrawal of international troops,” Ghani told the Afghan council in a speech Reuters, Monday (2/8).
Ghani claimed the Afghan government had a plan to bring the situation under control within six months.
The Taliban group claims control of 90 percent of Afghanistan. In the past few days, they have also invaded the three provincial capitals.
As a result of the fighting, many residents chose to flee.
The Taliban are increasingly attacking Afghan forces and seizing territory after the United States and NATO withdrew troops from Afghanistan.
Ghani also said the Taliban group is still in touch with terrorist groups, and continues to increase attacks against women and civilians. However, the Taliban denied Ghani’s accusations.
“Declarations of war, accusations and lies cannot prolong the life of Ghani’s reign; time is up, God willing,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on his Twitter account.
Peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban delegation began last year, in Doha, Qatar. However, the negotiations were deadlocked and did not result in any agreement even though it had been carried out several times.
The Taliban, said Ghani, are reluctant to make peace with the Afghan government unless the deteriorating security situation can be addressed. However, both sides pledged to speed up peace talks.
“It is time for the Taliban and the Afghan government to accept each other and move towards a peaceful solution,” Ghani said.
