Weather – Fear new heat record:

An extreme heat wave has hit parts of Southeastern Europe in recent days. In Italy, thousands of firefighters are fighting an intense battle against the flames, while both locals and tourists are being evacuated.

Also in Greece, fire crews are fighting the flames after a large forest fire broke out on Saturday near Patras west of the country.

New heat record

Meteorologists now fear that the standing European heat record of 48 degrees could be broken on Monday.

– In the southeast of Europe it is scorching hot right now! The sun is roasting and many places have soon reached 40 degrees, the Meteorological Institute writes on Twitter.

It is stated that the heat wave is due to a stationary high pressure that acts as a lid over the hot air.

Forest fire

In Spain, firefighters were deployed to put out a forest fire that broke out Saturday afternoon near the San Juan reservoir about 70 miles east of Madrid. The fire brigade managed to stabilize the fire on Sunday night, but they still ask people to stay away from the popular bathing resort.

Also in Greece, the fire brigade is fighting the flames. Five villages have been evacuated, and eight people have been hospitalized with fire and smoke injuries in the region, writes AFP.
