Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir reveal five potential business sectors in the present and the future. The five sectors are the health, food and beverage sector (food production), digital, banking, and logistics.
“There are 5 (sectors) that we can say business today and in the future, that is health, food production, digital is reality, banking and logistics,” said Erick at CNN Indonesia TV’s Insight with Desi Anwar event, Sunday (1/8).
In addition to looking at trends, these five sectors were also chosen because they contributed the largest dividends to the state, for example banking. Last year, four state-owned banks paid dividends of Rp. 13.3 trillion, or about 29.8 percent of the total dividend of BUMN, of Rp. 44.6 trillion.
Meanwhile, other sectors that are diligent in depositing tax revenues for the state are the telecommunications and mining sectors. Both contribute 80 percent of the total taxes paid by SOEs.
Speaking of dividends, Erick did not deny that the pandemic had eroded the share of dividend payments, while the State Investments (PMN) had actually increased.
If previously the ratio of dividends to PMN was 75:25, now the ratio is 50:50.
“I think business people are still good, so it’s zero, they haven’t paid taxes and paid PNBP (Non-Tax State Revenue) for the results,” he explained.
Pandemic Impact
Erick admitted that the finances of the majority of SOEs were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Not much different from private companies, he said state companies were also financially depressed due to the health crisis that spread to the economic sector.
“BUMN is the same, we are affected. 90 percent of BUMN are financially affected like the private sector,” he explained.
Erick said that the SOEs most affected were those engaged in the tourism sector and its derivatives, such as transportation, hotels, and others. He then gave the example of PT KAI (Persero) and PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk which experienced a drastic decrease in occupancy.
Erick said, the maximum occupancy or number of KAI passengers remaining was 15 percent of normal. Flights have the same fate.
Despite losing money, he said that SOEs cannot stop their services because they have an obligation to serve the community (public service obligation).
