Jerusalem –
Prime Minister Israel, Naftali Bennett denounced swastikas in a synagogue near Tel Aviv. Bennett called the vandalism “serious hatred”.
“Vandalism in a synagogue in Bnei Brak is a very serious act of hatred and incitement,” Bennett said as reported by AFP, Sunday (1/8/2021)
“The police will take action against the perpetrators to the maximum extent possible,” he added.
Police said they had launched an investigation into “the alleged smearing of swastikas on the walls of two synagogues in the town of Bnei Brak, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
Rabbi Asher Landau of Young’s synagogue Israel told to AFP that members of the congregation found swastikas on two doors of the place of worship on Saturday morning.
He also said a condom was put on the doorknob. “A terrible feeling. A sad feeling,” Landau said.
Landau said that many members of the congregation, including himself, had survived the Holocaust or their descendants.
He said photos of Shira Banki, a teenage girl killed in 2015 by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish assailant during the Jerusalem Pride parade, were strewn on the ground.
He added that a swastika and an image of Banki were also found in other synagogues in the neighborhood. Bnei Brak is home to a large ultra-Orthodox community.
Parliamentarian Israel Eichler of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party said the vandalism was the result of “incitement” against society. This was conveyed by the Jewish religious news site Kikar Hashabbat.
