ZONAUTARA.COM – Ophthalmologist Timmy Budi Yudhantara warned that the Corona virus can also be transmitted through the eyes. In order to prevent transmission through the eyes, people are advised not to touch their eyes when their hands are dirty.
In addition, the public is advised to continue to wear masks, wash their hands, and obey other health protocols.
Although the Corona virus basically attacks the respiratory tract, it can also be transmitted through the eyes.
This was conveyed by an ophthalmologist, Dr. Timmy Budi Yudhantara, SpM, last Friday (29/7).
“Why are we told not to touch our eyes or face? That’s because if the COVID virus is in our hands and then we touch our eyes, it will attack the conjunctiva, so conjunctivitis can occur,” he explained.
“Remember that the eye with the nose has a passage. Remember that crying sometimes becomes snot? That’s because there is a channel. It could be that COVID is in the channel, entering the nose. If it reaches the nose, later it can go inside again. So the transmission can be if it gets in the eyes, it can become pneumonia,” he continued.
However, according to Dr. Timmy, the case COVID-19 due to infection through the eye is actually rare. More frequent cases, COVID-19 patients experience eye problems after being declared infected with the Corona virus.
The most common symptom is red eyes. However, unlike red eyes due to dryness or fatigue, red eyes in COVID-19 patients are generally more visible, often accompanied by swelling, pain, and discharge.
“Because the inflammation is in the conjunctiva, he will be swollen and the lids are uncomfortable,” he concluded.
