Gen4 SSDs are “almost indistinguishable” from the PS5’s internal SSD in terms of speed, developer says

Models below the indicated specs were up to 15% slower in tests

The last few days were very busy for the owners of Playstation 5 and for those who are waiting for support for SSD external no console, Support for SSDs has been released in the PS5 beta firmware and we started to have the first confirmations of compatible models with the device, Western Digital’s SN 850 is console compatible e Seagate FireCuda 530 is also compatible with Playstation 5.

on your twitter, Mike Fitzgerald, who is director of technology at Insomniac Games revealed some details regarding tests that the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart developer team performed with some Gen4 SSDs.

The official started by saying that many beta tests would report results as they gain access to functionality and went on to say that some team tests with external SSDs had good results.

“It’s exciting to see PS5 beta testers get access to the SSD M.2 feature! I’m sure the public beta will result in a lot of benchmarking across different games and drives, but I’m going to reveal some of our results from the first Insomniac tests on Ratchet & Clank : is good.”

To be more specific in your post, Mike said that the Gen4 SSDs they tested that were in line with Sony’s recommended specs achieved almost indistinguishable results using the internal SSD., and also stressed the importance of checking which models are compatible so that the user does not encounter problems while using the external SSD for play on Playstation 5

“We tried some Gen4 M.2 drives below spec as well and saw up to 15% slower loading in areas of the game with more SSD stress. It’s not too bad, but keep an eye on the tech specs if you’re making a purchase from SSD, as our game relies on high quality storage.”

What draws a lot of attention in these tests is the report that the developer also tested some models below the stated specs and their results had up to 15% slower loading in more loaded game areas. While not such a significant loss, using SSDs below the stated specs can result in a poor user experience.

Now we can only wait for more tests being carried out and disclosed to the public, it is important for interested parties to wait for benchmarks with the comparison of models on the console so that they can choose the one that suits them best, in performance and also financially, as these models are suitable for the Playstation 5 will certainly have a high value, at least in the first instance.
