The space calendar in the month of August gets a break from the wave of “space tourism”, but on the other hand, it offers us a scintillating spectacle that the universe has offered us for the last 2,000 years, according to NASA. August will also give us a rare “take Azul” and another SpaceX release. Check out the full calendar.

Perseid meteor shower

The Perseid meteor shower is a spectacle that takes place between mid-July and late August. According to NASA, it is possible to observe up to 100 meteors per hour. No special equipment is needed to accompany the show, but it is recommended to go somewhere without bright light sources.

These meteors are the product of the debris of comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun once every 133 years. In the month of August, the Earth passes through the debris field. Ice and dust burn in our atmosphere to create a meteor shower. The meteor shower can be monitored on the 11th, 12th and 13th of August. The comet itself will only be visible in 2116.

Blue Moon

Each month has a full moon, but since the lunar cycle and calendar are not properly synchronized, every three years it happens that a month has two full moons. August 22 will have such a repeat. Despite its name, this Moon has no change in its color. It is a result of the American expression “once in every blue moon”, which means something very rare.

Launch of SpaceX

After launching a new wave of Starlink satellites, for internet network transmission, SpaceX prepares for its 23rd cargo resupply mission on the International Space Station. The Dragon capsule release is scheduled for the end of August, with no date set yet.

According to NASA, the spacecraft will carry a series of “scientific investigations”, such as the study on the prevention and treatment of bone density loss, an investigation to test devices that can detect and reduce vision problems and a new robotic arm.
