Epidemiologist from the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia (FKM UI), Pandu Riono, said Indonesia was on its way to a pandemic trap (pandemic trap) which is getting deeper. He assessed that currently Indonesia does not have a planned pandemic handling and clear targets.
The opinion was conveyed Pandu Riono via a tease on his Twitter account, @drpriono1. In the joke, he mentioned (mention) the Twitter account of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
“Pak @jokowi Indonesia is on its way to the Pandemic Trap (Pandemic Trap) which gets deeper and harder to get out faster. Control response can not be patchy like now. There is only one choice, control the pandemic with 3M, Test-Trace-Isolation and Vaccination,” Pandu wrote on Twitter as seen on Friday (30/7/2021).
Pandu Riono’s explanation
When contacted, Pandu explained further the reason for saying that Indonesia was heading towards the pandemic trap. He said that currently Indonesia had not succeeded in controlling the pandemic.
“Because until now we haven’t managed to control the pandemic, things are going wrong. There are no signs that we will succeed using any means. This means that we can take a long time to finish the pandemic. So Pak Jokowi has ended his term of office, maybe not yet. finished,” said Pandu when contacted, Friday (30/7) night.
Indonesia, said Pandu, does not yet have a target in dealing with the pandemic. He mentioned the way Indonesia handled the pandemic using a patchwork system.
“Because the problem is that we don’t have a target. When do we want to end the pandemic? Everything is a patchwork intervention. There are new cases that we make emergency PPKM, even though it can be predicted that if we don’t tighten it from the start, there will be a tremendous increase ,” he said.
Pandu brought up that Indonesia had been reminded about the new variant of Corona which had made other countries wary. But in fact what is feared is actually happening in Indonesia.
“WHO has been reminded by WHO, all of them have told us ‘this is Indonesia, there is a threat of danger’. At the time of the incident in India, we were warned not to go to Indonesia like in India. After all, for a long time we were like wallowing in a pandemic, an extraordinary pandemic hole. ,” he said.
According to him, Indonesia is getting deeper into the pandemic hole. Moreover, the transmission is not only in Java, but has spread to all islands in Indonesia.
Beware of the Delta Variant Corona Explosion
The spread of the Delta variant of the Corona virus, said Pandu, has been found throughout Indonesia. He considered that there would be an explosion of cases of the Delta variant of Corona.
“If we look at the Delta distribution of the results genome surveillance it has arrived in Papua, every time there are cases reported results genome sequencing, just waiting for the explosion. One by one there will be explosions, as we did not anticipate a few months ago when we found them in Java and in several areas in Indonesia,” he explained.
According to Pandu Riono, the term pandemic trap does exist in epidemiology. He revealed that overcoming the outbreak must be done in a planned and structured manner.
“It’s like we’re caught in a situation we don’t know. I don’t know what we call the exact analogy, but in epidemiological terms it’s about outbreaks. trap which we can’t handle because we don’t deal with it in a planned, structured way,” said Pandu.
