Global shortage of eye drug Visudyne, not available again until early 2022

There is a worldwide shortage of the drug Visudyne, which is used in the treatment of certain eye diseases. That reports the Medicines Evaluation Board. There are no alternatives to this drug and if patients do not receive it, their vision deteriorates.

The shortage of the drug Visudyne was caused by production problems in the American factory where the drug is made. The manufacturer expects the drug to be available again in the first quarter of 2022.

Visudyne is the brand name of a powder containing verteporfin as the active ingredient. The powder is mixed with water and injected prior to laser treatment for serosa and macular degeneration eye conditions. Those are retinal disorders. The macula is the center of the retina, with which people read or recognize faces.
