The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has also received an armored version of the Guard in the latest generation. Under the hood, as usual, has a twelve-cylinder fork.

For years, Mercedes-Benz has also included in its portfolio armored vehicles with the nickname Guard, for a special type of clientele, whose offer it has gradually expanded in recent years. However, the flagship Mercedes S Guard sedan has always remained an integral part of the portfolio. With the arrival of its new generation, a new version of the Guard has also been released, which will officially debut at the September IAA Motor Show in Munich.
The novelty is officially called the Mercedes-Benz 680 Guard, which gives the idea of an engine under the hood at first good. The number 680 in the case of the latest generation of the S-Class means a twelve-cylinder fork, with two turbochargers and a capacity of 6.5 liters, which ensures an output of 450 kW. The torque in this case is 830 Nm, 70 Nm less than in the case Mercedes-Maybach S 680 with the same engine.
However, all-wheel drive remains in this case, which required its necessary reinforcement due to the heavy armored body. After all, the new S Guard weighs about five tons, which is more than double the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 with a weight of 2,350 kg. Even so, the car can move up to 190 km / h. This is the first time that the S Guard has received an ATV.
However, the main motif of the Mercedes S Guard is the armored body. During the tests, 500 rounds of large-caliber revolvers and army rifles were fired at the car, primarily in critical places such as windows or doors. Thanks to this, the manufacturer promises ballistic protection at the level of VPAM VR10, so the car meets the highest standards for civilian vehicles.
This logically required significant modifications to the structure. Specifically, there is a separate cage made of special steel and carbon fiber. There are exactly 500 components made of special steel, some of which are even an inch thick. These modifications go so far that the luggage compartment has been reduced to 390 liters, precisely because of the additional reinforcements between the cab and the luggage compartment. Of course, there are also bulletproof glass (about 10 cm thick), hydraulically controlled due to its weight, or bullet-resistant tires. Michelin Pax can cover up to 30 kilometers in the event of a shot.
Other equipment adapted to the working career of the armored S-Klasse is also special. Beacons or flag carriers in the front fenders do not surprise much, but other elements do. For example, the driver has a button to start the fire extinguishing system. You can also let fresh air from the oxygen tank into the cabin, in case of an attack with tear gas, which is enough for two minutes.
A four-seater or a five-seater car with a price tag of around half a million euros (approx. 12.8 million CZK) can then be retrofitted with all sorts of elements as in the classic S-Class. The reason is, as usual, the protection of the crew.
