Three personnel military Armenia reported killed in clashes with troops Azerbaijan in the disputed border area, Wednesday (28/7).
“Three troops were killed and two others injured as a result of the armed response that took place after Azerbaijani troops attacked at 08.30 local time,” the Armenian Ministry of Defense said.
Yerevan said the firefight took place near the village of Sotk, in the northeastern sector of the Armenian border.
Meanwhile, the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Azerbaijani side deliberately aggravated the situation after its troops “deliberately entered illegally in the sovereign territory of Armenia.”
On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan accused Armenia of carrying out military provocations. Baku said two of its soldiers were injured after Armenian troops opened fire on Azerbaijani territory in Kelbajar district in the early hours of Wednesday.
“Armenia is fully responsible for the escalation of tensions along the borders of the two countries,” Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense was quoted as saying AFP.
Tensions between Baku and Yerevan have steadily escalated since May, when Armenia accused Azerbaijan’s military of crossing its border in the country’s south.
Armenia and Azerbaijan also fought a six-week war last fall that claimed about 6,500 people. The fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region ended in a Russian-brokered ceasefire in November.
In the ceasefire agreement, Armenia ceded the territory it had controlled for decades.
Since the war, the militaries of the two countries have occasionally reported incidents of firefights between militaries on the border. This has sparked fears that open conflict will re-occur at the border.
