Bhutan has given 90 percent of the adult population the second corona vaccination within a week. Unicef calls the “fastest vaccination campaign in this pandemic”.
The Himalayan country, sandwiched between India and China, has a population of 800,000. In April, the population was given the first shot in two weeks after India donated 550,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
After that, Bhutan had to source vaccines elsewhere. India said it desperately needed the doses itself, because of the rising infection rates from the delta variant.
Through the Covax program, Bhutan received half a million Moderna doses from the United States. Denmark, Bulgaria and Croatia then donated another 400,000 doses of AstraZeneca.
