Representatives of International Olympic Committee athletes have accused 41-year-old Foroughi of being a member of a terrorist group in his country. If this proves to be the case, they demand the exclusion of Iran from the 2020 Olympics. The information was provided by the website of the Swiss daily Blick.
Foroughi has been a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for years, which is classified as a terrorist organization in the United States. What exactly he was doing there is the subject of debate. According to Iranian state media, he works as a nurse in a hospital in the Iranian capital Tehran.
There he allegedly learned to shoot in the cellar. In one of the television interviews, Foroughi had to admit that he had served in the elite units of the Quds-Force Revolutionary Guard during the war in Syria. They served in the civil war to defend President Bashar al-Assad.
“The gold scorer said he was there on guard duty and was also tasked with preparing for counterattacks by opponents. Even if all this were true, the Foroughs would no longer take the gold medal. An international protest would not change anything.” added blick.ch.
Slovak Juraj Tužinský also competed in the air pistol at the 2020 Olympics. The reigning European champion failed to qualify and finished in 27th place.
