More than 300 corona patients in hospitals in our country again: numbers continue to rise

Between 17 and 23 July, an average of 1,472 new infections with the corona virus were detected daily. That is an increase of 10 percent compared to the previous week. Since the start of the pandemic, 1,117,697 Belgians have already contracted a corona infection.

When we compare the daily figures, we see clearly more infections in the last few days compared to a week earlier.

The reproduction number – the extent to which sick persons infect others – is 1.08. If that value is above 1, the epidemic increases in strength. In other words, an infected person infects an average of 1.08 others.

Testing

More than 64,373 tests (-7 percent) were performed in the period from 17 to 23 July.

There is a positivity ratio of 2.6 percent. A little more than two in a hundred tests are therefore positive.

Hospital admissions

Hospital admissions also confirm the upward trend. There is an average of 28.3 new hospital admissions per day. This is an increase of 9 percent compared to the previous week. In total, about 75,956 people have already been admitted.

Currently, 305 corona patients (+14 percent) are in hospital, including 97 (+15 percent) in intensive care.

death

During the same period, there was an average of 1 death per day. That is 8 percent less than in the previous week.

In total, there have now been 25,228 deaths since the pandemic broke out.

Vaccinations

In the meantime, 7,899,440 Belgians have received a first dose of the vaccine, which corresponds to 68.6 percent of the total population and 83 percent of the adult population. 6,201,304 compatriots are fully vaccinated, accounting for 53.8 percent of the total population and 67 percent of adults.

In Flanders, 4,946,094 inhabitants are at least partially vaccinated. That’s 74.34 percent of the entire population, or 89.4 percent of adults. 3,760,107 of them are fully vaccinated. This concerns 56.52 percent of the population or 69.87 percent of adults.
