“Xiaomi Also Lets Smartphones Expand Virtual Working Memory”

We recently wrote that on some OPPO smartphones with ColorOS 11 you can “expand” the working memory by converting a maximum of 7GB ROM to RAM. Xiaomi will come with the MIUI 13 shell in August and this shell would have the same feature.

According to the Chinese rumor spreader Digital Chat Station Xiaomi will present the MIUI 13 shell in August. A new feature in this shell is the possibility to virtually expand the working memory of the smartphone by a maximum of 3GB. To add virtual RAM, the smartphone takes a few GB of storage space that will then be used as working memory. This feature only works on smartphones equipped with a Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 870 or Snapdragon 888 processor.

The new feature is also less interesting than it seems. Smartphones are already designed to use the storage space when the working memory is fully used. ROM is also less fast than RAM, so that 3GB of virtual RAM is less fast than 3GB of actual RAM. The feature does give more freedom about how much storage space the smartphone can use if the working memory can no longer handle the tasks.
