North and South Korea restore communication line, want better relations

North and South Korea have reached an agreement on reopening communication lines and improving relations. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have exchanged several letters to that effect since April.

The so-called hotline between the countries is being restored. The communication line was tested this morning. The hotline was still in 2018 openafter two years of non-use.

North Korea broke up again in June last year all communication with the neighboring country. Pyongyang accused Seoul of not intervening against the spread of propaganda by defected North Koreans. Shortly afterwards, the communications office in the inter-country demilitarized zone was taken over by North Korea blown up.

In 2019, a second summit between Kim and then-US President Trump in Vietnam on the dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear program ended in a failure. Since then, Kim has been less and less willing to cooperate internationally.
