Four children have been sentenced to detention after Norway changed the law. The Children’s Ombudsman is concerned about the development.

The Children’s Ombudsman has mapped 11 of the most serious criminal cases where the perpetrator was a child. This worries them the most.

Four people who were children at the time of the crime have been sentenced to detention in Norway. Several of them have been placed in the youth unit at Bjørgvin prison in Bergen.

In 2015, a 15-year-old girl was sentenced to nine years in prison for the murder of an environmental worker at a child welfare institution in Vollen in Asker.

This is the first time a child has received this type of punishment in Norway. Since then, three other children have been sentenced to such indefinite sentences. Detention means you could potentially be jailed for life.
