The Risk of Being a Doxing Victim Snoops on Dating App Users

IDXChannel – In the era digital it seems dating app become the most popular way for people to meet and communicate. However, with relationships moving to the digital world, public gathering and exposure of personal data (doxing) is a major concern.

The Kaspersky team conducted a survey, uncovering the main threats and concerns that users face when dating online.

Yet another 55 percent of respondents claimed they were afraid of being followed by someone they met online. Fear of being followed by someone you meet online is also a form of doxing.

The cybersecurity company said that excessive sharing of information on dating apps and social media could cause big problems in the future.

It is said that doxing actors (doxers) can easily retrieve and utilize these personal data. For example, Doxer knows the target’s home address, workplace, name, phone number, etc., increasing the risk of transmitting threats from the online world to the physical world.

Every six respondents (16%) admitted to having experienced a doxing crime. In addition, as many as 11% of respondents who faced doxing crimes while dating online, did not know that they had been a victim of doxing.

Not only that, 40% of interviewees admitted that when communicating online, their partner shared screenshots of the conversation without the victim’s consent, threatened to share personal information, leaked intimate photos, and even stalked them in real life.

According to security expert at Kaspersky Anda Lakina, it’s important when communicating with someone online, to keep the basic rules of digital privacy in mind. “For safe online dating, we recommend not sharing personally identifiable information, such as phone numbers, location, home and office addresses, etc.,” he said in a written statement, Saturday (24/7/2021).

Preventing threats at an early stage like this will allow app users to enjoy online dating more worry-free.
