Alexander Zverev measures his successes on Grand Slam titles, but it does not seem to work with the important trophies so far. Eurosport-Expert Boris Becker complained that the young German “always makes the same mistakes. Zverev fails because of Zverev and not because of the opponent.”
The big three – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer – are increasingly moving into reach for the young players around Zverev, who can certainly be counted among the leaders in this circle. Nadal and Federer are not present at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. So it looks like the 24-year-old’s first big title might be close.

1. Novak Djokovic (No. 1)
The biggest chunk on the way to the gold medal is tour dominator and top favorite Novak Djokovic. The world number one from Serbia is after the successes at the Grand Slam tournaments in Melbourne, Paris and Wimbledon on the hunt for the Golden Slam, which so far only Steffi Graf managed to achieve in 1988. At the Australian Open in February there was a direct duel with Zverev in the quarter-finals, which Djokovic clearly won. The German could meet the number one in Tokyo in the semifinals at the earliest and finally get the hoped-for success there at a major tournament.
2. Daniil Medvedev (No. 2)
The second in the world rankings made it to the final of the Australian Open in February. There Djokovic started his hunt for the Golden Slam with a convincing victory. Before that, however, Medvedev was outstanding and threw strong competitors such as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev out of the tournament Down Under in the quarter and semi-finals. Medvedev won his last encounter with Zverev at the ATP Cup in February. The Russian would be a possible final opponent at Olympia Zverev.
3. Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 4)
The Greek was able to impress with his consistent performance on the entire ATP tour this year and even won titles in Lyon and Monte-Carlo. The 22-year-old already prevailed against Medvedev and Zverev, but did not make it past Djokovic in the final of the French Open. This was followed by a disappointing first round off at Wimbledon and a defeat in the quarter-finals in Hamburg. Despite this form low, Tsitsipas can look forward to the Olympic tournament with confidence. In the first round he is the favorite against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
4. Andrey Rublev (No. 7)
With constant performances on the tour, the 23-year-old Rublev was also able to play his way to the top of the world. He defeated Nadal in Monte-Carlo and took the title in Rotterdam. So far, the breakthrough has not been made at the Grand Slams. After the first round in Paris and a defeat in the fourth round of Wimbledon, he now has to compete in his first Olympic tournament against local hero Kei Nishikori. Rublev has only lost one set of three against Zverev in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
5. Félix Auger-Aliassime (Nr. 15)
The 20-year-old Canadian can start with confidence in Tokyo after a strong tournament at Wimbledon. In the first round, however, defending champion Andy Murray is waiting, who would love to crown his career with his third (!) Olympic victory in a row. At Wimbledon, Auger-Aliassime was able to show his skills on the pitch, not least by defeating Zverev in a gripping five-set match. It remains interesting to see how he will develop in the next big tournament and on hard surfaces. Zverev would certainly like to take revenge for the defeat in London.
