Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs repatriated the Indonesian Ambassador in Pyongyang, Berlian Napitupulu, along with the staff of the Indonesian Embassy and their families on Friday (23/7) due to the implementation of the lockdown in North Korea. North Korea.
Spokesman for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, said that a total of 15 people, including Indonesian Embassy staff and families, had now arrived in China.
“That’s right. They left North Korea yesterday and are undergoing quarantine in China,” Faizasyah told CNNIndonesia.com, Saturday (24/7).
Faizasyah said that the ambassador and his staff would return to Indonesia after undergoing a 14-day quarantine period in China.
He explained that the North Korean government had indeed invited foreign representatives in Pyongyang to repatriate or temporarily transfer diplomatic staff.
“This appeal is given considering that the North Korean government has implemented a lockdown by closing access to the traffic of people and goods. This policy has been implemented by the North Korean government since the beginning of the pandemic until an undetermined time limit,” said Faizasyah.
Since North Korea issued this advisory, almost all foreign diplomatic staff have made adjustments.
Indonesia also followed in the footsteps of other countries’ diplomatic missions after coordinating in detail with the North Korean government. However, Faizasyah ensured that the implementation of the diplomatic mission with North Korea would continue.
“The diplomatic mission will be carried out from Jakarta until the situation allows for the diplomatic mission to return to Pyongyang,” he said.
So far, North Korea has not reported a single case of COVID-19. However, conditions in North Korea are greatly affected by the policy of closing the area to avoid the transmission of Covid-19.
The closure of the region has exacerbated the economic situation of North Korea which has also been hit by a number of natural disasters in the past year. As a result, North Korea is now hit by a food crisis.
