Analog TV ‘Dead’ Soon, Here’s How to Get a Free Set Top Box

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Information and Telecommunications (Kominfo) targets analog switch off (ASO) or analogue TV migration to digital in November 2022. With this plan, the public is asked to immediately have a digital TV set top box so that they can enjoy television broadcasts in the country.

The transition to digital TV will be carried out in five stages. The first phase will be carried out on August 17, 2021.

“The Ministry of Communication and Information urges people who live in ASO Phase 1 areas to immediately switch to digital broadcasting,” said Kominfo quoted on Saturday (24/7/2021).

In accordance with Government Regulation (PP) No. 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications, and Broadcasting (Postelsiar) article 85, the government will also provide free digital set boxes to poor households who still use analog television. The provision of set top boxes comes from the proportional contribution of multiplexing organizers and the government through LPP TVRI.

Then how to get it?

“The distribution of set top boxes for the first phase of ASO will be provided by the SCM, Media and Rajawali groups in coordination with the Provincial Government and Regency/City Governments whose areas are included in the first phase of ASO,” explained Kominfo.

For information, digital terrestrial television broadcasting is broadcasting that uses VHF/UHF radio frequencies as well as analog broadcasting, but with digital content formats.

This analog television is further away from the television transmitting station, the signal will be weaker and the image reception will be poor and shadowy. It is different with digital television broadcasting which continues to deliver clear images and sound to the point where the signal can no longer be received.

To enjoy television broadcasts, people only need to buy a Set Top Box (STB) which costs Rp. 150,000 per unit. STB is a device for receiving digital broadcasts that can be connected to a television. So far, there are 44.6 million analog TV sets in the country.

For digital television, television is already using the second generation Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T2) which is a development of the DVB-T digital standard which was previously established in 2007.
