Xiaomi Wants Samsung Slide To Be King Of The Global Smartphone Market

JAKARTA – After the Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi has overtaken Apple as the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker. Now Xiaomi is trying to change the top position of the global Korean smartphone maker Samsung.

Data from research firm Canalys says that Xiaomi smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2021 have reached 17 percent. A 2 percent share of Samsung topped the world’s largest phone maker.

On the other hand, in the same quarter of 2020, Xiaomi phone calculations soared to more than 80 percent. With this achievement, Canalys called this the first time Xiaomi changed Apple’s position. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that he will keep the position.

“Despite the celebrations now, I want to make sure that we can maintain our second place steadily and firmly in the future,” said Lei Jun.

Canalys’ Ben Stanton has openly stated that Xiaomi has set a new target to top the rankings. They intend to change the position of Samsung.

“All suppliers are fighting hard to secure component supply amid global shortages. But Xiaomi has been looking at the next prize: replacing Samsung to become the world’s largest supplier,” Stanton was quoted as saying by CNN International.

In addition, Stanton also explained that the Chinese technology company managed to spread its wings in overseas market share quickly. Mobile phone shipments to the Latin American market alone have increased by more than 300 percent, to Western Europe by 50 percent, and to Africa by 150 percent.

In terms of price, Xiaomi phones are priced cheaper than manufacturers Apple and Samsung. The price difference between Xiaomi and the two phone makers is roughly 40 percent and 75 percent cheaper.

However, Xiaomi itself has to compete with national smartphone manufacturers, such as Oppo and Vivo. Stanton called the rivalry a “tough battle.”
