Six people have been arrested on the African island of Madagascar for allegedly plotting an assassination attempt on President Rajoelina. The Minister of Public Security says it concerns three suspects from Madagascar, a Frenchman and two with dual (Franco-Malagassic) nationality.
The six were arrested after a months-long investigation. Two of the suspects are said to have previously been employed by the French army.
Political upheaval
Little is known about the background of the murder plot. President Rajoelina has been president of the former French colony for the second time since 2019, which gained independence in 1960.
Rajoelina first came to power in 2009 after a coup that ousted President Ravalomanana. Rajoelina remained president until 2014 and won the 2019 elections from Ravalomanana. The latter claimed that the elections were fraudulent.
