The US state of Oregon has been burning on a gigantic scale for many days. The largest conflagration in the country, the Oregons Bootleg Fire, grew to 1,601 square kilometers. There is also a fire in California, Montana and Nevada. The flames not only destroy – they also produce smoke and ash.
Due to strong winds, these move from the US west coast to the east coast – and now also turned day into night in New York! The Big Apple is 4023 kilometers – that’s almost 4.6 times the length of Germany, from north to south – from the fire inferno.

On Wednesday, this even led to air quality warnings on parts of the east coast. The end of the fires is far from in sight. On the contrary: the Tamarack fire, which appears to have been caused by a thunderstorm in Alpine County in California, has so far eaten everything on 176 square kilometers and is racing on practically unchecked. 1200 firefighters are trying the impossible – and so far have no chance.
Meanwhile, Oregon is hoping for weaker winds and lower temperatures. 2200 people fight the flames there, against the third largest fire in modern history.
2000 houses have already had to be evacuated, 5000 more are threatened. 70 inhabited buildings have already been burned. Nobody has died in the fire so far.
At least a good news that makes the sun a little bit brighter again …
