Hessenwasser is investing 100 million euros in the construction of a new waterworks in Gernsheim-Allmendfeld. A pipeline is to connect southern Hesse with the Main.
After the first four kilometers of the new Ried pipeline was put into operation in autumn 2018, the plans for the second construction phase of the planned drinking water pipeline are now available.
After the planning documents have now been disclosed, citizens who are affected by the planned construction project can comment on the documents and raise objections to the Darmstadt Regional Council until August 20, for example.
Some farmers had criticized the fact that they had not been actively informed about the project by the Hessenwasser utility responsible for the construction project. However, the utility has set up its own website for the project, on which a leaflet, a brochure and technical information about the project have been published.
The Darmstadt regional council will evaluate the comments received and start a hearing process. Construction work can only begin once the plan approval decision has been received.
The project
The new Riedleitung is for the utility company Hessenwasser one of the most important investment projects.
The 35 kilometers long Aqueduct is more than five decades old. It leads from the Hessian Ried to north of the Main. To rehabilitate the pipeline, a second is to be built.
The drinking water supply of over a million people in the Frankfurt / Rhein-Main region depends on the Riedleitung. The entire project is planned until 2030 and is divided into four construction phases. jjo

By 2030, Hessenwasser wants to build a second pipeline from the Hessian Ried to the north of the Main for 100 million euros in order to renovate the existing pipeline, which is around 55 years old, and to be able to act more flexibly.
According to company spokesman Hubert Schreiber, the utility company wants to start the second construction phase, which is to run over a length of 18 kilometers from the Gernsheim-Allmendfeld waterworks to Riedstadt-Wolfskehlen. The new route is to run further east in order to establish a connection to the waterworks in Pfungstadt-Eschollbrücken.
On the southern edge of Allmendfeld, work has been going on for around nine months on the new building for the local waterworks, which is one of the most important drinking water treatment plants in the region. The new system, which costs 28 million euros to build, will replace the existing system from 1964.
According to Nicole Staude, Head of Technology at the regional water supplier, the new building is “making good progress” and the work is “well on schedule”. She is confident that the plant can be put into operation as planned in summer 2023.
As part of the planning for the southern construction section of the new drinking water pipeline, the potential construction areas along the route from the Allmendfeld waterworks to Riedstadt-Wolfskehlen will be inspected by the ordnance disposal service from Monday onwards. The subsoil is to be examined in August and September. Earth drills or special exploratory caterpillars are also used.
