The recent unrest in South Africa (South Africa) has claimed at least 276 lives, the government said on Wednesday, July 21st.
212 deaths were previously reported.
In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, 234 riot-related deaths have been confirmed, while in Gauten, the most populous province in South Africa, home to the country’s largest city, Johannesburg, the death toll has reached 42.
The police are investigating 168 deaths as murders.
Many of the dead were crammed into grocery, electrical, alcohol and clothing stores that were looted during the riots. Others, on the other hand, died in the burned buildings.
CONTEXT:
In South Africa, riots sparked protests against the imprisonment of former South African President Jacob Zuma.
On June 29, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt of court without attending a hearing on corruption charges against him.
Meanwhile, in another case, Zuma, who held the presidency from 2009 to 2018, has been charged with 16 allegations of corruption, money laundering, fraud and racketeering.
Protests soon escalated into violence and shoplifting escalated into poor urban areas.
Now protests with army assistance managed to stifle.
Six people have been accused of inciting violence. Several thousand more have been detained in connection with robberies.
