The Institute of Public Health (ISP) of Chile approved the emergency use of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V against Covid-19, which will be administered to people over 18 years of age.

The director of the ISP, Heriberto García, reported the news on Wednesday after the support received by five votes in favor, two abstentions and one against.
García stressed that Sputnik V has an effectiveness greater than 91 percent and that “no major adverse effects of importance have been observed.”

However, they will request more background information on the immunogenicity of the Russian drug, which has been licensed in 69 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Turkey, Hungary and Egypt.
Sputnik-V is the sixth vaccine approved by the Chilean health authorities, in addition to those of Pfizer / BioNTech, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, CanSino and Janssen.

The South American country has vaccinated more than 13 million people with at least one dose of anti-Covid-19 vaccine, while almost 11.8 million have completed the immunization.
Currently, the Chilean authorities are evaluating the option of applying a booster dose due to the possible drop in antibodies in people who were vaccinated.
