More arrests for fraud with hijacked SIM cards | Inland

The three new suspects are a 23-year-old man from Heerlen and two 21-year-old men from Stein and Elsloo. At the end of February, three other men were arrested in South Limburg. They worked at provider T-Mobile. There they are said to have ‘moved’ customers’ phone numbers to new SIM cards, which were put in other phones. That’s called SIM swapping. With this, cyber criminals take over the complete telephone number of another person. The actual user can no longer call, send text messages and use the mobile internet. And if that phone number is set up with accounts for, for example, internet banking, as extra security, those accounts can also fall into the wrong hands.

After the first arrests, the police raided a telephone shop in Vaals. After the new arrests, a telephone shop in Stein was also searched.

The suspects are trapped in restraints. This means that they are not allowed to have contact with the outside world, but only with their lawyer.
