The guards quickly took away Goit, who has been transitional president since May. The guards also restrained the attacker, and the assassination attempt is being investigated, the presidential administration said.
The journalist saw blood at the scene, but it was not yet clear who had been injured.
Goita later told state television channel ORTM that he was feeling “very good”. “It’s part of the leadership role, always frustrated. There are people who want to try things at any time to cause instability,” Goita said.
French Embassy in Mali Twitter stated that it “strongly condemns” the “shocking act of the special day of peace and tolerance”.
Last August, Goité became the leader of the military junta after the coup that overthrew Mali’s elected president, Ibrahim Bubakar Kate. The junta later handed over power to an interim government led by President Ba Ndau and Prime Minister Moktar Uan, who promised to restore civilian rule in February 2022.
Goita, who was vice-president of the caretaker government, overthrew Ndau and Uuan at the end of May. Mali’s constitutional court declared Goita transitional president on May 28, and a new government was formed in June with military officials in key positions.
