Scalpers have focused on Steam Deck, they only pay for reservations

Once again, it showed how scalpers affect prices and the entire hardware market. We have consoles here Steam Deck, which none of the regular customers have seen before, could not touch them, see for themselves how well the games will run on them in the emulation on SteamOS. In fact, we only have a press release, the first pieces of consoles sent to game magazines and influencers, which are also not in the final form, and above all the beginning of the pre-sale, which started last Friday. –

In Valve, they decided to start the pre-sale long before the start of the sale itself and offer reservations for $ 5, with the proviso that we have the option to make one within one account. It looks like Steam saw a sharp rise in newly registered accounts about last week, with scalpers driving up to $ 5,000 in one day.

Earlier, Valve also stated that it wanted to start selling in December, but this probably only applied to a very limited initial offer. It is now true that the newly ordered 64GB and 256GB models will not come into the hands of American customers until the second quarter of next year and the 512GB model even in the third quarter, so at the earliest sometime in a year. There is probably no such interest in European markets yet, as in the case of all three versions of the console, the delivery date is currently expected in the first quarter of 2022.

So, according to the scalpers’ idea, many people should be interested in paying $ 3,000, 4,500 or even $ 5,000 for (perhaps) being able to buy a 512GB handheld game console in a year, or $ 800 for a 64GB version. Yes, in some cases it is only a sale of the reservation, although in others the customer should pay the full amount of the entire console. However, Valve is currently collecting only a $ 5 fee for the reservation, which means that it basically gives scalpers a very decent income with only a minimal deposit and risk.

Prices are also affected by availability, ie sold reservations for the basic 64GB model, which the customer has to receive by the end of this year, are available for more or less the same money as reservations for the 256GB model with availability next year.

Finally, we have information that the Steam Deck uses an SSD in the M.2 2230 slot. Upgrades will be possible at home, although SSDs of this format are not available in such a selection as the 2280 and the slot in the console is not exactly accessible. . But if it’s just screws and not glue or a sealed case, it’s not a problem.
