“Unfortunately, during the night, we lost one of the patients. It was an acute event, we suspect that it is a cerebral bleeding. The formation of blood clots and bleeding are part of the picture of this disease and, along with the intestine and kidneys, where these events very clearly happened, most likely it also happened in the brain, because the evolution was dramatic, lightning – over a period of several tens of minutes.
The irony of fate is that, very soon after the first patient died, a second one has a strikingly similar evolution, with a sudden, severe and violent degradation of the general condition. He was also intubated, resuscitated, he is currently ventilated by artificial respirators. (…) We managed to do a tomography that confirms the fact that he had a cerebral bleeding. We are trying our best to stabilize the situation, but also his general condition, biological parameters and tests do not look good at all “, said doctor Radu Tabacaru, head of the Intensive Care Unit at Marie Curie Hospital in the Capital.
The case of infected babies: Another child died at Marie Curie
The doctor said that all babies infected with this deadly bacterium are about the same age, around 10-11 months.
“Currently there are only two intubated and ventilated, one was intubated in the morning. It is stable. He also had a moment of hesitation, but did not repeat this moment during the weekend. We hope we can to extubate the second patient during today or tomorrow, to see how he tolerates breathing “, said Dr. Tabacaru, specifying that the evolution of the disease depends on many factors, including the body’s resistance.
“There is no mathematical formula to tell us how it will evolve,” he said when asked by reporters what the prognoses are for surviving babies.
The doctor also specified that 4 patients are hospitalized for intensive care, 2 of which are intubated. There are 3 more babies on peritoneal dialysis.
Asked insistently if there may be more unpleasant surprises, Dr. Tabacaru admitted this.
“Obviously it’s possible. The condition of these two patients, especially the last one, who is still alive, was extraordinarily good. He (the second baby who died, ed.) Was sitting on his ass and playing with some “Toys in bed. We were to transfer him to the ward on Monday. This dramatic event happened. So we can expect any of them to be big surprises. Things are not very linear for these patients yet.”
In principle, it is a toxin that causes an inflammation of the blood vessels (…) which causes micro-thrombosis, small blood clots that clog the capillaries (…) These small blood clots are practically in all organs, “said Dr. Tabacaru.
Also, when asked by journalists, he gave assurances that this time an autopsy will be performed on the deceased child, unlike the first case, when the parents refused.
“Yes, yes. This whole situation is being investigated by the police, a criminal case has been opened. An autopsy is being performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine,” Radu Tabacaru said.
11 babies, most of them from Arges county, were hospitalized several days ago at the Marie Curie Hospital in Bucharest with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. Until this hour, the source of the diseases is not known, the authorities denying, following the controls performed, that it was about plain water, powdered milk or oranges that the little ones would have consumed.
Babies in hospital with a deadly bacterium: The results of the DSP Arges investigation
The case of infected babies: Oranges were not contaminated either
Instead, following the controls performed by DSP Arges, it was found that two sources of drinking water in the county would provide water unsuitable for consumption.
