Düsseldorf (dpa) – The long lockdown, especially in the German home market, left its mark on electronics retailer Ceconomy in the third quarter of the business year. While sales increased thanks to better business development, especially in Spain, Italy and Turkey, operationally the company slipped even more clearly into the red due to the elimination of short-time work. “Almost the entire current financial year has been shaped by the Covid 19 pandemic and the associated temporary market closings, especially in Germany,” said company boss Bernhard Düttmann on Monday when preliminary quarterly figures were presented. The third fiscal quarter was no exception.
In the third quarter (as of the end of June), sales rose by 7.3 percent year-on-year to 4.4 billion euros, as the company announced on Monday in Düsseldorf. Adjusted for currency effects and portfolio changes, the increase was 8.0 percent. Online sales rose by 3.3 percent to 1.5 billion euros and accounted for around a third of group sales. In operational terms, Ceconomy slipped deeper into the red with its two chains MediaMarkt and Saturn. The adjusted operating deficit (EBIT) rose from 45 million euros in the same period of the previous year to 93 million euros. The group plans to present the full quarterly report on August 12, 2021.
