Nearly 60 mental health organizations draw attention to violence against care providers in a full-page advertisement in several national newspapers. They do this in response to an incident last Monday.
In an institution in The Hague, a man in psychological distress shot two paramedics, one of whom died. Then the man shot himself.
It is not yet clear what the shooter’s motive was. The 67-year-old man had an appointment at the Hague institution last week.
“We can never and will never accept violence against aid workers,” the ad reads. “This incident must not affect the 1.3 million people who call on mental health care every year and are provided with the best possible care. Together with other social partners, we guide them. This must be safe for our employees, patients and society”.
The advertisement was signed by 58 mental health organizations.
