First time in China, veterinarians get infected virus Monkey B (BV) to death. However, the doctor’s close contact has so far been declared in good health.
The case of Monkey B virus infection in humans in China happened to veterinarians who work daily at institutions that research non-human primates.
“The 53-year-old doctor initially complained of early symptoms of nausea and vomiting, a month after he dissected two dead monkeys in early March,” the China CDC Weekly English Platform of Chinese said on Saturday, quoted by the Global Times.
In the journal, the infected doctor virus Monkey B had sought treatment in several hospitals, until finally died on 27 May.
Experts say no fatal, or clinically proven BV infections have been previously reported in China. Therefore, the vet’s case is the first human BV infection identified in China.
Researchers had also collected veterinarians’ cerebrospinal fluid in April and identified it as positive for BV, but samples from close contacts came back negative for the virus.
The virus, originally isolated in 1932, is an enzootic alphaherpesvirus in apes of the genus Macaca. It can be transmitted by direct contact and exchange of bodily secretions, and has a mortality rate of 70 percent to 80 percent.
The journal suggests that BV in monkeys may pose a potential threat to workers in the same field as veterinarians. There is a need to strengthen surveillance in laboratory apes and workers in China.
