At the beginning of the ceremony, which ended the festival on Saturday, the jury chairman Spike Lee announced the victory for Ducournau. However, he did so before the official announcement of the main award, foreign agencies wrote.
According to the AP, the ceremony began where it should have ended. The unexpected announcement was followed by confusion and shouting from the audience, the French filmmaker did not first go on stage to accept the award. After a failed start, Lee finally called on actress Sharon Stone with the words “she won’t ruin it”.
The wild thriller Titane, interwoven with violence and eroticism, in which the protagonist inter alia fucks a car, has earned divided criticism. While some emphasize its originality, others were discouraged by the frantic pace, Reuters reports. However, Ducournau, 37, earned the award, which was won by only one other woman – Jane Campion in 1993 for Piano.
Award for the role of the killer
After the error of the chairman of the jury, the announcement of other awards continued smoothly. The award for best male performance was won by American actor Caleb Landry Jones from Cannes, who played the role of the murderer Martin Bryant in Justin Kurzel’s film Nitram, who murdered 35 people in Tasmania in 1996. The award for best actress went to Norka Renate Reinsve, who starred in the film Verdens verste menneske by Danish filmmaker Joachim Trier.
The Grand Jury Prize, which Reuters calls second place in the show, went to Finnish filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen, director and two-Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi and Hytti nro 6 (Coupe No. 6). Leos Carax won the award for best director for the musical Anette.
Last year, the festival was canceled for the first time in history due to the covidu-19 pandemic.
