Wanted to The exhibition will be called “The Tree of Life”, and this is what Gerardo Vera told the current director of the National Museum of Almagro, Beatriz Patiño Lara, with whom he was preparing this exhibition that has opened its doors within the framework of the International Theater Festival. Classic of Almagro. Neither Gerardo nor Beatriz imagined that it would become a tribute for one of the most complete creators, a versatile artist and a revolutionary who sought beauty and emotion in all his creative facets.
Beatriz Patiño, in a telephone conversation with ABC, recalls that meeting with the director and filmmaker who loved art, theater and opera. And that legacy is reflected in this show that It is exhibited in the church of San Agustín de Almagro and that can be visited until November 1. Then, he will move to Malaga and Madrid, coinciding with premiere of the autobiographical work Oceania, directed by José Luis Arellano and starring Carlos Hipólito, who will play Gerardo’s shoes.
This exhibition – curated by Beatriz and Alejandro Andújar – is a deserved tribute, after his premature death by Covid, at the age of 73. Through 110 pieces an exhaustive journey of his half century of career is carried out. Sketches of scenographies and costumes, photographs, dresses, handwritten notes, fetish elements and audiovisual materials, make up this selection of original pieces, many of them unpublished, from the funds of the National Theater Museum and from the private collection of her husband, José Luis Collado.
«There are two main elements in the exhibition. One is a tree, which has been treated naturally and used in the assembly of Divine Words, from Valle Inclán ”, explains the director of the Almagro museum. «Valle Inclán persecuted him throughout his career. Gerardo wanted to break with the usual theater. The tree is an iconic symbol of life and wisdom.
Beatriz insists that this exhibition is a tribute to the life and ingenuity of this artist, who was born in Madrid in 1947. «The other element that can be seen is a very large photograph of him. Downstairs, there is the table with the storyboard and the glasses that are elements that allow the filmmaker to be identified ”, she remarks to remember that she has seen these days prominent directors and friends of Gerardo Vera cry when contemplating all this legacy.
The show is completed with the projection of an audiovisual with images of various moments in the prolific career of the director, who died wanting to live and with many projects in mind.
