–Hans Babl has already donated 182 times and wants to reach the 200 mark. However, this is countered by the age limit, which in his opinion should be made more variable. Right Dr. herring Photo: Theresia Schindler

Schönthal. The community of Schönthal welcomed its long-term blood donors in a festive setting. After almost two years of pandemic-related pause, an honor was possible again.
For the first time, the ceremony took place in the new gym, where Mayor Ludwig Wallinger received the guests. BRK division chairman Dr. Peter Hering was pleased that “things are slowly returning to normal”. Blood donors from the Schönthal community were honored, whose honor would have been due in 2020.
Rosina Malterer from Döfering, Klaus Rötzer from Öd and Ernst Braun from Premeischl each donated blood 75 times. Manfred Schneider from Flischbach and Martin Babl from Premeischl each donated blood 100 times. Hans Mauerer from Döfering has already been to donate blood 150 times and Hans Babl from Schönthal has made the 175 “full”. Together they donated blood 750 times – which results in the imposing and impressive amount of 375 liters.
Hering reported on donating blood during pandemic times: Fortunately, willingness to donate has not decreased. It was encouraging that many young people came. Overall, the number of donors was increased by around ten percent.
“As in all years, it got really tight again in the summer of 2020,” said Dr. Herring. He reminded that blood is only available for a period of six weeks – after that it has to be discarded. This makes blood donation all the more important as a continuous process. In Germany, almost 20,000 blood products are required every day.
“There is no indication that donor blood can trigger a corona infection in the recipient,” said Hering. Antibodies from convalescent or vaccinated persons would also not be transferred to the donor. After a vaccination, you can donate immediately without hesitation.
Mayor Ludwig Wallinger reminded that blood still cannot be produced artificially. For him, blood donors are “quiet lifeguards” and “role models for everyone”. Hence this extraordinary honor with an official thank you.
Wallinger: “Our society needs such people, needs such role models, needs people who stand up for the common good”. He was pleased that for around 50 years between 80 and 100 people had come to Schönthal for every appointment.
Hans Babl, who has been honored for donating blood 175 times, sees blood donation as a donation of life: His motto: “Donate blood – give life”. He also broke a lance for organ donation. He considers it extremely important to have an organ donor card with you.
He also reminded that the donor benefits from his donation as well as the recipient. Because a medical examination and the exact analysis of the donated blood can provide early information about one’s own state of health.
